IMHO #1

Gay marriage has been a relatively recent controversy. Although activists for gay marriage have long been trying to obtain equal rights, the controversy surrounding the topic has only been dramatically blown up in the last ten years.

In my opinion, I think gay marriage should be allowed because there is no logical reason for it not to be allowed. The world isn’t going to implode, nor will any wars be fought over this topic. To be honest, I’m just surprised that this is such a controversial topic to begin with. We have so many more pressing issues in our nation and yet social issues constantly rise to the top having more importance than wars that we are having overseas. What’s absurd about this whole thing is that our country gets so sidetracked by one topic or idea and we’re stuck talking about it for years. Perhaps that’s what makes our country great, but our country is no longer productive. We’ve become a stagnant nation sitting on certain social issues, but when it comes to economic problems we make those decisions immediately without even a second thought.

America needs to wake up and realize what’s important. It’s 2012, we should have been passed social issues after all these years. Is that just human nature? Maybe, but when the economy hasn’t fully recovered and Iran continues to make threats, I think we have more pressing issues than social issues. Instead of social issues being our main point of focus, perhaps we should look at more worldly topics.

I am all for gay marriage, but we need to move on as a country. We need to become a progressive country again. We need to be that ass-kicking machine that we used to be in the 1960s. This country can do it, it is just going to take some time.
